I want to know why are some people being audited and some not being audited?

There are certain areas where requests for verification (audit) are common. These include medical expenses not reimbursed by medical aid, repairs and maintenance and home office expenditure. Therefore if you claim these expense in your tax return, a request to submit supporting documentation to justify these expenses is more likely. Sometimes audits are required in the case where a refund is due from SARS. Other times, it is based on a random selection and people are just unfortunate if they are selected to submit supporting documentation. This request is becoming more and more common and doesn't mean you have done anything wrong.
