Can a former student reclaim tax paid while working as a student?

When I was a student, I worked for a corporate (twice - 2012/2013, and 2013/2014) and paid SARS income tax on the money I earned. Can I reclaim this money?I do not have the pay slip, but I do have the IRP5 forms. Even though it is about 24 months later, can I still reclaim it? Are students required to pay tax?

Did the amount you earned exceed R63,556 in the 2013 year? This is the tax threshold, so tax should not have been taken off your earnings if it was below this amount. In this case what you can do is submit tax returns for those previous years and include the IRP5 documents on them for what you earned. It's hard to say whether SARS will return a refund to you (their internal processes are unpredictable), but at least they will know about the income and you will have a full tax return submission history which is important. With any luck declaring the tax you paid that wasn't due will result in a refund to you.
